So I know how to heel-toe downshift...but with my hobbit feet and the pedal placement in my 2000 Impreza I find that I can simply put the left side of the ball of my foot on the brake pedal and press down while I just simply rock my foot onto the gas. No heel involved. Anyone else just use the two sides of the ball of their foot instead of their heel? Or am I just doing this wrong? It seems to work just fine.

I don’t know of anyone that actually uses their heel. The pedals are too close together for that.

I’m sure there’s some tractor or truck with straight-cut gears from the 50s that have the pedals far enough apart for require a heel, but not anything any of us would likely be driving.

Most of the time, it’s just the side of the foot.

I do that for hill starts sometimes. I got the idea from reading about it somewhere, but I don’t remember where.

It does seem to me like it only works if you aren’t finessing the brake, since at least I have to keep both pedals at roughly the same height for it to work.

I have to do the exact same thing. I’m a size 10 shoe which I’d think is fairly normal. The pedals in my NA are already small and close together, plus I added a FlyinMiata pedal kit to make it easier to just use the right side of my foot since it’s impossible to use my heel.

This is how I do it every day. For the last 10 years.

It’s called “heel and toe” for a reason unknown to me. It’s correctly done exactly the way you’re doing it. Actually using your heel and ball of foot would expose you as a poseur.

I do it all the time with wider-toed athletic shoes and boots. Ain’t no thing.

Matt Farah uses it, talk about it on the smoking tire podcast. I wear triple E shoe so it kind of just happens.

I drove an 80’s pickup that did require me to turn my foot almost completely sideways and actually use my heel. It wasn’t easy or practical, I just wanted to see if I could do it. I made it work, kind of, but it was hard.

I’m a size 10 1/2, but with super wide hobbit feet, so I can do it with most shoes. Though it is kind of hard with my FiveFingers on.

Good to know I’m not crazy and not a poseur.

I had to go semi-heel on my 300ZX. Unlike my current MR2, the pedals are not super-close together for sports driving. That’s what you get in a GT I suppose, makes sense.

I do it but it is dangerous. My foot some times slips of the brake.
